In an effort to capture customers using AI platforms for daily digital discovery, Grubhub has launched an integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT, allowing users to search for meal ideas through the artificial intelligence chatbot and seamlessly complete orders.

The rollout marks a major technical milestone for Grubhub following its $650 million acquisition by food-tech startup Wonder. The conversational search feature is available across Grubhub's entire network of 415,000 restaurant merchants nationwide. Because of the integration, the service extends beyond third-party partners to include all of the proprietary restaurant concepts housed within Wonder's physical locations, according to a company spokesperson.

By embedding Grubhub into ChatGPT, the company aims to offer a more conversational, personalized method for users to choose what to eat based on mood, group dynamics or dietary preferences.

"The best dining experiences always start with discovery, and we are constantly looking for ways to meet Grubhub customers wherever they are," Tapojoy Chatterjee, vice president of product management at Grubhub and Wonder, told FastCasual. "By integrating with ChatGPT, we're enabling users to effortlessly turn inspiration into relevant, local restaurant choices through a natural, conversational experience."

Chatterjee said will benefit Grubhub's merchant partners by connecting them with customers earlier in the decision-making process to capture high-intent demand. The conversational feature is now live for ChatGPT users, who can browse real-time restaurant options and menu items before being redirected to Grubhub to finalize their transactions.
