With 10 million daily food deliveries, Meituan-Dianping a name to know

It may be relatively unknown in the Western World, but in 20 of China's biggest cities, the name Meituan-Dianping is as commonly heard as Amazon and Google. That's because in China Meituan-Dianping delivers fast food to just about everybody there who has an internet connection.

The 4-year-old company announced this week that it has reached more than 10 million daily orders and deliveries, according to a news release.

In that relatively short span of time, the leaders of the company have partnered with more than 50,000 restaurant chains in China — including KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Xibei, Jinbaiwan, Dayali, Meizhou Dongpo and Yoshinoya — to deliver to customers in cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

Oover the most recent six months, the volume of on-demand deliveries has doubled from 5 million to 10 million per day. According to big data research company, QuestMobile, three of Meituan-Dianping's mobile applications — Meituan, Dianping, and Meituan Waimai — generated more than 57 million on-demand delivery monthly active users in the first half of 2016.

"Our mission at Meituan-Dianping is to help consumers eat better and live better through quality services and products," Meituan-Dianping Vice President and On-Demand Delivery unit General Manager Puzhong Wang, said in a news release. "We are heavily focused on providing a positive experience through each delivery, ensuring a safe, convenient, and fairly priced dining experience to all who use and rely on our services."

With billions of pieces of historical order data, delivery routes, and customer and merchant data, Meituan-Dianping's dispatch system uses big data analysis to generate the best delivery route in under 100 milliseconds, giving the system the power to complete a delivery within approximately 28 minutes on average.

"Our data shows that three out of every 10 Chinese consumers order food delivery," Wang said. "It has become the third most popular dining option, behind home-cooked meals and restaurant dining. The speed of delivering these meals to our customers is of integral importance to Meituan-Dianping, but we also place a deep focus in delivering a trustworthy experience through our high standards for food quality compliance.

"Partnering with local food safety authorities, we have developed strict food safety guidelines and systems, and monitor all merchants to ensure that each is abiding by our business ideals and commercial requirements."
