Spread Bagelry, a Montreal-style bagel chain based in Philadelphia, has promoted John Gonzalez to chief operating officer.

Gonzalez joined the company in Dec. 2025, and has since overseen operational systems, team development and performance improvements across the brand. As COO, he will focus on operational execution across all locations, mentorship and the maintenance of quality standards.

"John has become my right hand and one of the most trusted leaders in our organization," Tom Selementi, CEO of Spread Bagelry, said in a company press release. "Since joining the company, he has consistently demonstrated the leadership, discipline and commitment to excellence that define our culture. He has built strong relationships with our teams, helped implement the systems and processes that allow us to scale, and elevated performance across our restaurants."

The promotion comes amid regional expansion for the chain, which specializes in scratch-made, honey water-boiled bagels baked in wood-fired ovens. Following an opening in Atlanta this past April, Spread Bagelry plans to continue its expansion throughout the mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

The company aims to operate 35 locations along the East Coast by the end of 2028.

"I am incredibly honored to step into the role of chief operating officer," Gonzalez said in the release. "Spread Bagelry has built something truly special — a culture centered on great people, exceptional hospitality and an unwavering commitment to quality."

Founded in 2010, Spread Bagelry currently operates 17 locations across four states, serving breakfast and lunch sandwiches, house-made spreads and specialty coffee.
