Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers deployed its first restaurant on a U.S. military installation, opening April 15 at U.S. Army post Fort Lee in Prince George County, Virginia.

The unit, operated by franchisee JRI Hospitality, is inside the base commissary at 300 Adams Ave. and features a smaller footprint than a traditional Freddy's restaurant, with a streamlined kitchen and simplified menu.
"We had to be flexible in how we approached this location, from the size of the space to how we operate day to day," Cam Blakely, president of JRI Hospitality, said in a press release.

To meet military requirements, the team navigated an extended approval process, completed background checks for all staff and adapted to base-specific operational guidelines.

Construction moved more quickly than a typical buildout, with the space completed in approximately one month.

"This started as a partnership opportunity with the base, and from day one it's been a collaborative effort," Blakely said.

"We've built a strong relationship with the base team and are excited to officially open our doors."

Wichita, Kansas-based Freddy's has 580 locations across the United States and Canada. The company said the Fort Lee opening is the first step in a broader strategy to expand onto U.S. military installations.
