After a weeks of worrying about lettuce being contaminated, customers may now need to avoid jalapenos.

Chipotle Mexican Grill said Tuesday it has removed jalapenos from some of its restaurants after identifying the peppers as a potential ingredient linked to a salmonella outbreak, replacing them with supplies from different growers.

Bloomberg News first reported that Chipotle had pulled jalapenos from multiple stores in Minnesota after learning the peppers may be linked to a salmonella outbreak in the state that has sickened 110 people.

The company's shares fell 7% in afternoon trading following the news.

Chipotle said it began tracing ingredients through its supply chain after learning of a potential outbreak and identified jalapenos from a common lot as a possible source, along with the restaurants where the peppers were distributed.

In a statement on its website, Chipotle said:

"The health and safety of our guests and employees is our highest priority. We are aware that public health authorities are investigating the source of a Salmonella outbreak in the supply chain impacting several food service retailers. We are cooperating with the public health authorities in their efforts.

"As part of our established health and safety protocols, upon learning of a potential outbreak, we immediately initiated our ingredient traceability system and were able to identify jalapeños as a potential common ingredient from a common lot, and the restaurants where it was distributed. Out of an abundance of caution, we proactively removed the jalapenos from our restaurants and replaced them with product from different growers."

Chipotle said it is continuing to cooperate with public health authorities as they work to determine the full source of the outbreak.
