Tossed continues expansion; moves into D.C.

Tossed, a fast casual brand known for its fresh gourmet salads, crepe wraps and sandwiches, has announced the signing of a major deal for a more than 20-unit master franchise for the metro Washington, D.C. area.

Developer Ryan Durishin will create both franchised and sub-franchised locations in Washington, D.C., as well as in Northern Virginia, and Baltimore and Montgomery counties in Maryland.

Durishin, a local entrepreneur, was first introduced to the Tossed concept by Fransmart, the leading franchise development company for Tossed. He has joined the Fransmart team while he builds his Tossed franchise business.

Tossed CEO and President Eric Schmitt said, "Ryan is a natural fit for Tossed — young, energetic and health conscience. Living and breathing the concept along with knowing the real estate is very helpful when expanding a territory."

"Consulting for Fransmart gave me the opportunity to examine several different restaurant franchises from the inside out,” Durishin said. "At the end of the day, I was drawn to Tossed because the food is so unusually good, and I believe Tossed will compete well in the Washington, D.C. area."

This isn't the first large expansion for the Tossed concept this year. In August, the company announced a plan to build more than 30 new stores in Southern California.

Tossed restaurants are between 1,400 and 1,600 square feet and feature a new interior design and a non-cook kitchen. The company recently launched a new website called "Design Your Own Salad." The website features nutritional information, links to the brand's social media outlets and a new online ordering system. The company also recently released a new freestanding kiosk version of the restaurant that is perfect for malls, airports, offices and colleges.

Tossed was founded in 1998. Customers who enjoy low-calorie foods and lighter options, such as made-to-order salads that feature more than 50 choices of toss-ins, are loyal to Tossed's "Eat Smart, Think Fresh" philosophy.
