Starbucks expands pay-by-iPhone pilot

March 31, 2010

Starbucks Corp. has expanded its test of a pay-by-phone option to include an additional 1,000 locations inside Target stores.

Anarticle in Computerworldhighlights that Starbucks customers with iPhones or iPod touches can now flash their mobile devices to purchase coffee or other items.

From the story:

The pilot for the Starbucks Card Mobile App started last September at 16 company-operated stores in Seattle and Northern California, and was successful enough to expand further, a spokeswoman said.

No plans have been announced for further expansion to more than 11,000 Starbucks in the U.S., and any expansion will depend on customer and employee satisfaction, she added.

The Starbucks mobile payment app can be downloaded for free on Apple's App Store. The app displays a unique Starbucks barcode on its screen that enables customers to pay at the counter via mobile phone.
