Pei Wei goes transparent with ingredients

October 24, 2018

There's no guessing when it comes to what's in Pei Wei's Wei Better Orange Chicken as the fast casual brand is going transparent with regard to ingredients.

Pei Wei, which formally petitioned the U.S. Food & Drug Administration last week to mandate that restaurants disclose menu ingredients, is offering a clear view of what makes up its most popular dish, according to a press release.

The Asian fast-casual brand has published the full Ingredients Statement for its  all-white-meat, never frozen Wei Better Orange Chicken, as well as select other items. Pei Wei further promises that additional dishes will be released until its entire menu is completely transparent and that, by the end of 2019, all artificial colors, flavors and preservatives — dubbed its 'No Wei List' — will be removed from its entire menu.

So far 2,000 people have signed its FDA change.org petition which is the latest move by the brand to provide a clean label consumer experience via its The Wei Forward.

"We think the time has come for restaurants to stop hiding what they're putting in the food they sell, which is why we've called on the FDA to require all restaurant chains to disclose their ingredients,” said Pei Wei CEO J. Hedrick in the release. "After all, the packaged foods we buy in the grocery store have ingredient labels. Why shouldn't restaurants provide the same information?"
