June 13, 2006

WASHINGTON — Vapiano is a German-based fast-casual concept and it is moving to the United States. Specializing in Italian food with a European flair, the first store will open in November.

"Vapiano is an exceptional restaurant concept that will change the way that fast-casual restaurants do business in the future," said Kent Hahne, president of the restaurant.

Vapiano customers use a chip card to personally order food or drinks from the bar or from the individual fresh pizza, pasta or salad stations. The chip card has been successful, the company said.

The restaurant is built with fine oak furnishing, natural stone, soft leather and modern design elements. Restaurants are 5,000-8,000 square feet, seat 150 guests and have a blended check average of about $13.50 per guest in the European stores.

There are 10 Vapianos in Germany. (To view a slide show of a Vapiano store in Europe click here)
