Dunkin' customers consume the most Wi-Fi data in coffee category

September 30, 2014

New research from network analytics and mobile intelligence company, wefi, explored WiFi connectivity trends at national coffee chains. The company considered WiFi speed and application usage patterns of customers at these restaurants, and found that Starbucks, Tully's Coffee and Dunkin' Donuts have the fastest download speeds and highest total data consumption.

According to a news release, Google Chrome, Facebook and YouTube are most used applications by coffeeshop patrons.

When looking for the fastest download speeds, Starbucks has consistently performed better than competing chains. However, the most data consumed per device occurs at Dunkin' Donuts with Facebook, YouTube and Twitter driving the most usage.

Google Chrome was by far the most popular application, with more than18 minutes of foreground data consumption (amount of time an application is open and active), per device on average, closely followed by Facebook (16.78 min.) and YouTube (14.8 min.)

Highlights from the research include:

Coffee Shops with the fastest download speed

  • Starbucks (0.18 mbps)
  • Tully's Coffee (0.15 mbps)
  • Dunkin' Donuts (0.13 mbps)

Coffee shops with the highest total data consumption

  • Dunkin' Donuts (47.45MB)
  • Tully's (27.75MB)
  • Starbucks (24.26MB)

"Coffee, and by extension, coffee shops are increasingly seen as an indispensable part of Americans' morning ritual," wefi CEO Zur Feldman said in the release. "With many franchisees looking to provide additional services and grow their businesses, the availability of a fast, reliable Wi-Fi offering has become an important consideration."
