2005 profits soar 35% at Panera Bread

Profits at Panera Bread rose a whopping 35 percent in 2005. For the 52 weeks ended Dec. 27, net income was $52.2 million versus $38.6 million for the comparable period. Revenue increased 34 percent for the period to $640 million and were driven by a 7.7 percent comparable-store sales increase.
Panera opened 139 stores in 2005, for a total of 877 systemwide. Fourth-quarter results were equally solid with revenues increased 33 percent from the same period in year prior to $173 million. Net income increased 15 percent to $16 million.
