Restaurants dish out savings to soothe the stressed tax filer

Restaurants are doing their part to calm the masses with money-saving deals on Tuesday, the nation's day of shared tax-paying pain.

April 17, 2017 by S.A. Whitehead — Food Editor, Net World Media Group

Be very still this Tuesday, April 18, and you might hear the sound of the nation's procrastinators writhing in pain as they hurriedly put the final touches on their tax returns in hopes of meeting the annual midnight deadline for our national source of shared pain — the tax return. And what do we Americans do when we're in pain? We eat, of course, and that's why so many restaurant systems are offering a salve to soothe the savage pain of the bureaucracy blues that we all are humming to ourselves.

Here's a round-up of some of the deals we've heard about — though by no means all of them. We also extend a big warm virtual "hug" to restaurant operators across this land for helping all but the most "non-compliant" among us make it through our national day of monetary mourning.

Noodles & Company
Any customer placing a request through order.noodles.com by the end of business Tuesday, using the code "TAXDAY17" at checkout gets $4 off a $10 or more order. To put that inTax Day perspective, the company said if a customer used the average refund the IRS sent last year of $3,218 purely at Noodles & Company, that individual could take home enough of the chain's new Thai Green Curry with Shrimp bowls to last for a whole year of dinners and then some.

Bruegger's Bagels

For the fifth year, this chain is giving out Great American cookies. All customers can get a free birthday cake cookie at the bagel-maker just for showing up and asking for one, no purchase required.

Schlotzsky's
Beleaguered filers get an original sandwich free here when they buy a 32-ounce drink and bag of chips on Tuesday, April 18.

Hungry Howie's
This pizza chain is putting the emphasis on the date this tax day, by charging just 18 cents for a medium one-topping pizza when ordering a larger single-topper at regular price and using the promo code, TAXDAY when ordering online or for carryout through Wednesday, April 19.

Capriotti’s
This sandwich counters the tax man's pocket-emptying strategy by giving its customers a free upgrade to a bigger sandwich when ordering a small there this Tuesday, which will automatically upgrade to a medium sandwich order at no charge.

Hot Dog on a Stick
This brand is handing out a little of nature's nerve soother in the form of tryptophan-rich turkey in its original turkey dogs. The amino acid is well-known for its calming effects and now finished filers who stop by the chain for a bit will get a free original turkey dog just for showing up, no purchase necessary.

"Tax Day can be a little hard to stomach, but not at Hot Dog on a Stick," Hot Dog on a Stick Vice President Lisa Merrell, said in a news release.  "Every day is delicious at our locations."
