Franchise Focus: Go Brit serving up British favourites, 'jolly good time'

The Delaware-based fish-and-chips brand claims to serve "British favourites and jolly good time."

September 16, 2016 by Cherryh Cansler — Editor, FastCasual.com

London native Alison Blyth is sharing a bit of her homeland with Delaware residents in the form of Go Brit, a fast casual, fish-and-chips concept.

The two-unit chain is a spinoff from her full-service concept, Go Fish, which opened 12 years ago. Go Brit opened in 2012, and both concepts showcase Blyth's passion for authentic British comfort food; the menu boasts beer-battered fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherd's pie, mushy peas and sticky toffee pudding. Customers love the diverse menu as much as the stylish décor that pays tribute to London’s most recognizable landmarks, Blyth said.

Fast Casual chatted with Blyth to find out her plans for the brand.

FC: What is your growth plan?
Blyth:
Our plan is to grow mainly through franchising; the plan is to open 50 units in the next five years. Ideally the stores will be located along the eastern seaboard but we will evaluate other opportunities on an opportunistic basis (e.g. eastern Canada and Middle East, where we have received enormous interest).

FC: What do you look for in afranchisee?
Blyth:
We are looking for financially qualified owner/operators who have demonstrated experience owning and operating restaurants, and also those who share an understanding and passion for the enormous business opportunity which our offering presents.

FC: What capital requirements must they have?
Blyth:
Franchisees should have a net worth of at least $500,0000 with half of that liquid.

FC: What makes Go Brit different from competitors?
Blyth: We really don’t have any direct competition. Even though fish and chips is a mainstream item in the casual dining category, there are no fast casual chains who focus on this ever popular item in a limited-menu format, which is why this opportunity is so compelling. In addition, our authentic and proprietary award-winning British recipes result in an enormously superior offering that gets rave reviews from press and customers alike, and our impactful British branding is unique and helps convey the authenticity or our concept.

FC: What types of procedures do you have in place to ensure your brand remains true as you expand?
Blyth
: We have detailed pre-opening, operations and site selection manuals to name a few, plus a senior management team with over 100 years of collective restaurant experience to help ensure that every franchisee enjoys the same success as Go Brit! has experienced.
