Buffalo Wild Wings revenue up 32%

Comps, revenue and net income increase despite negative economic factors.

February 11, 2009

Same-store sales at Buffalo Wild Wings Inc. increased 4.5 percent at company-owned locations and 2.5 percent for franchise-owned stores, the company has announced.

Buffalo Wild Wings released Feb. 11 financial results for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 28.

Total revenue increased 32.6 percent to $121.2 million, compared to $91.4 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Company-owned restaurant sales for the quarter increased 35.7 percent to $109.8 million driven by the same-store sales increase and 36 more company-owned restaurants in operation at the end of the quarter. The company also saw an increase of 31 more franchised restaurants at the end of the period versus a year ago.

For the fourth quarter, net earnings increased 28.7 percent to $7.7 million versus $6 million in the prior year.

Year-end results

For the full year ended Dec. 28, the company reported a comps increase of 8 percent and company-owned locations and 7 percent at franchised locations.

Revenue increased 28 percent to $422.4 million for the year, compared to $329.7 million reported in 2007. Net earnings increased 26 percent to $24.4 million, up from $19.7 million reported in 2007.

For the year, Buffalo Wild Wings increased its number of locations by 67 units.

"We believe our 2009 annual goals of 15 percent unit growth, 25 percent revenue growth, and 20 percent to 25 percent net earnings growth are achievable. Our brand offers a unique and appealing experience that is more than just going out to eat," said Sally Smith, Buffalo Wild Wings' president and chief executive officer.

According to an Associated Press article in Forbes, Jefferies & Co. analyst Jeff Farmer said in a note to clients that the company's same-store sales in the first quarter to date are already "off to a huge start" — up over 8 percent.

He cited the chain's strong brand and improved operations for the increase. The company also boosted prices on its menu to help offset the increased cost of chicken wings.
