8 foodservice innovations that should be on your radar

Check out eight innovative foodservice products designed to make operating a restaurant a little easier and energy efficient.

Innovation and sustainability were two of the key themes at HostMilano, a restaurant and hospitality show in Milan, Italy, featuring nearly 2,250 vendors and about 200,000 attendees. To put that in perspective, the National Restaurant Association's annual show in May has about 65,000. Needless to say, it was impossible to see the entire show, but below is a roundup of eight innovative foodservice products designed to make operating a restaurant a little easier and greener.

Barney
Barney used to be known only as a lovable dinosaur, but these days he's a cocktail-making robot from F&P Robotics AG. Customers order their libations as well as pay via a touchpad interface, which signals Barney to pick up a glass, add ice, mix the drink and hand it to a customer. The interface displays the customer's name and drink order when it's ready for pick up. Barney can make up to 120 drinks per hour. We'll drink to that!

ScanBox IoFood
We've all heard of the internet of things, but ScanBox is taking it to the next level with its Internet of Food. The connected boxes not only hold and transport food, but they also allow users to monitor the food quality throughout its lifetime — from cooking throughout the serving process. The system also generates food-safety reports. Nothing's getting by this guy.

Scraegg Pro
Eggs have never been faster, thanks to Scraegg Pro, a machine that scrambles eggs in 15 seconds and serves them in a to-go cup or on a plate. The machine can make porridge and a tomato soup as well, which would make for a random dinner, but you don't have to have them at the same time.

Ecodyger
The Ecodyger transforms organic waste, including plates, biodegradable/compostable cups and cutlery, into an organic-mineral fertilizer. At the end of the seven-hour process, the machine leaves a dry solid residue for use in gardening activities. One man's trash really is someone else's treasure in this case.

QualityFry
QualityFry allows frying without a smoke extraction system, which leads to more sustainable and energy-efficient operations than a traditional fryer. Also, oil consumption is reduced because the machine is closed and compact and does not allow light or oxygen to enter. Electricity costs are lower as well. Sounds like a win, win.
