Illegal Pete's: 'We want to be living wage plus'

Illegal Pete's has earned a reputation for attracting and keeping high-quality employees. How do they do it?

December 3, 2014

Pete Turner, founder and president of Illegal Pete's, has a straightforward approach to attracting and retaining top talent: compensate employees well and treat them right.

Illegal Pete's pays well above minimum wage and offered healthcare benefits long before the Affordable Care Act was adopted. As a result, turnover is low, with average tenure for management hovering around nine years, and the entire crew of its latest location still intact 16 months after opening.

Turner discusses the details with Anke Corbin of Splickit in this video interview.
