Starbucks recognized by EPA

November 2, 2010

The U.S. Environmental Protecton Agency has announced that Starbucks has increased its ranking to No. 4 on the EPA's National Top 50 list of the largest green power purchasers.

Starbucks more than doubled its annual green power purchase to more than 573 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of green power annually, which is enough green power to meet 55 percent of the organization's electricity use. Starbucks is buying renewable energy certificates from 3Degrees and Nexant.

"We applaud Starbucks' leadership in green power purchasing," said Rick Albright, director of the EPA's Office of Air, Waste, and Toxics.

Other than Whole Foods, Starbucks is the only foodservice provider on the list. The top five include:

  1. Intel Corporation
  2. Kohl's Department Stores
  3. Whole Foods
  4. Starbucks
  5. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
