Starbucks plans German expansion

September 21, 2011

Starbucks Corp. is planning a major expansion in Germany. CEO Howard Schultz told the German daily newspaper, Handelsblatt, that the number of coffee shops will be "doubled or tripled" in coming years.

According to Reuters, Starbucks' German presence is relatively modest even though Germany is one of the world's leading coffee-drinking countries.

Starbucks has only 150 German locations in its 17,000 global network.

"Our business in Europe is still relatively healthy. In Germany the business is running good,” Schultz said. "But we can see very well that the world is currently very fragile and we are considering very carefully where and how we expand."

He went on to say that the company will be largely concentrating on Asia in the next 12 months.
