Retail, foodservice sales see May surge

U.S. retail and food services sales for May hit $444.9 billion, an increase of 1.2 percent from the previous month, and 2.7 percent above May 2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

U.S. retail and food services sales for May hit $444.9 billion, an increase of 1.2 percent from the previous month, and 2.7 percent above May 2014, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Total sales for the March through May period were up 2.1 percent the same period a year ago.

Retail trade sales were up 1.4 percent from April and 2 percent above last year. Motor vehicle and parts dealers were up 8.2 percent from May 2014, and food services and drinking places were up 8.2 percent from last year.

The Bureau will release the June sales figures July 14.
