Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Stumptown won't be melding the retail experience

Peet’s Coffee & Tea is buying Stumptown Coffee Roasters, but customers won’t find both brands sharing counter space.

Peet’s Coffee & Tea is buying Stumptown Coffee Roasters, but fans of the two beverage retailers won’t find the retailers sharing counter space or have the opportunity to get both beverages at the shops’ locations.

"We both fit well under a family of coffee brands run independently and treated as separate businesses but with similar values," Joth Ricci, president of Stumptown, told the New York Times.

The move comes at a competitive time in the high-end coffee segment that has seen even the top players striving to retain leadership in market share. Starbucks recently launched a new exotic brand called Starbucks Reserve.

The Timesreport noted financial details of the acquisition by JAB Holdings Company, which is the major owner of Peet’s, is not being released.

The move will be a win-win for both brands, according to Stumptown’s VP of wholesale and retail business.

"As our growth has continued, we’ve also continued to have challenges as far as our capacity," Matt Lounsbury told the Times. "Peet’s will give us more ability to resolve those issues."
