A new report found that some of the most popular burger ingredients are wasabi, poblano, habanero and hummus. They have all increased their menu presence over 60 percent since 2013, according to Datassentials new "Burger Keynote" report, which details what burger toppings consumers are ordering. More than 1,000 consumers were asked for their thoughts on a range of burger options, flavors, trends and ingredients for the report.
Leaner meats, such as bison, salmon and lamb, are also on the rise across the industry. Sriracha continues to lead the trend in ethnic flavors, experiencing triple-digit growth in the past year.
Also according to the report, high-quality ingredients and unique flavor profiles have become the new standard for burgers. Brioche and pretzel rolls have replaced sesame seed buns as trendy burger carriers for new and limited-time-offers at major QSR and fast casual dining chains. Burger hains have also seen an influx of premium cheeses, such as smoked gouda, goat cheese and gorgonzola.
