New café offers fast casual version of khantoke

August 20, 2012

Houston diners can now try khantoke, a popular dish of northern Thailand, in a new fast casual restaurant called Khun Kay Thai Caf. Khantoke usually consists of about four to 12 dishes served on elaborately-decorated trays. Guests typically sit on the floor and musicians sometimes perform during the dinner, according to ultimatebellaire.com.

Co-owner and chef Kay Soodjai's take on khantoke includes a dinner menu with five Thai foods with the menu changing weekly and seasonally. The restaurant is now serving Thai chicken with vegetables, a summer orchard salad, white rice, a Thai dumpling and a trio of sticky rice samplings.

Unlike with traditional khantoke, guests at Khun Kay don't sit on the floor but will receive a large square tray with five square bowls for $8.95.

Khun Kay Thai Caf is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Carry out and limited delivery are also available.
