More E coli issues for Chipotle?

Chipotle is facing a new E. coli issue, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which announced it is investigating an outbreak of a different strain of E. coli that may be inked to the chain.

Because it is not known if these infections are related to the larger, previously reported outbreak in the Pacific Northwest, these illnesses are not being included in the case count for that outbreak. This investigation is ongoing, according to the CDC, which reported the following:

  • Five ill people have been identified in Kansas (one), North Dakota (one) and Oklahoma (three).
  • The illnesses started on dates ranging from Nov. 18-26
  • All five customers reported eating at a Chipotle Mexican Grill in the week before illness started.

Chipotle announced last month that it would revise its food-safety standards, and co-CEO Steve Ells made a public apology last week on the "Today" show, pledging to ensure top safety procedures. Chipotle shares, however, hit a 52-week low today after the CDC reported the latest investigation.
