Just Salad is partnering with Gotham Greens for its supply of greenhouse-grown romaine.
The produce will be available at Just Salad stores on Dec. 3 in New York City and Chicago, according to a press release.
The news comes shortly after a romaine contamination event that prompted federal food safety authorities to pull all romaine lettuce from the nation's food stream due to a multistate outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 infections.
"When we opened in 2006, I never thought it’d be possible to serve great romaine grown right here in New York City, but Gotham Greens has made that happen," Just Salad CEO and co-founder Nick Kenner said in the release. "We pride ourselves in serving unparalleled freshness to our guests, and this hyper-local supply chain in both New York City and Chicago — our two biggest markets — truly delivers on that front."
Gotham Greens is one of the largest hydroponic growers of leafy greens and operates four greenhouse facilities in New York City and Chicago.
Following federal recommendations for clearer romaine labeling, Just Salad is also enhancing its protocols around supply chain transparency, according to the release, and working closely with vendors to ensure every case of romaine is clearly marked with its respective harvest region.
