In a news release, Global Aquaculture Alliance announced that Darden Restaurants will adopt the alliance's Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards. This means the parent company of Red Lobster and Olive Garden will require BAP certification from its shrimp suppliers.
"BAP certification benefits consumers, buyers and the diverse aquaculture supply chain by providing a uniform set of standards to assure that shrimp are responsibly produced," said George Chamberlain, Global Aquaculture Alliance president.
The BAP certification standards provide quantitative international guidelines and auditing procedures that limit environmental impacts and protect the wholesomeness of shrimp throughout the production process, according to the release.
