Chipotle reports use of GMOs

June 20, 2013

Although Chipotle is known for its local, sustainable ingredients, the chain is gaining a lot of attention this week for being transparent when it comes to its use of labeling genetically modified organisms.

GMOs, developed in the '90s to increase farmers' productivity, are often criticized by health advocates and environmentalists, and the chain is the first official fast-food chain to label the ingredients it uses that contain GMOs. Twelve of the 24 ingredients listed on the chain's website have a red "G," which indicates when GMOs are present.

All tortillas and rice, plus all the meat options, except pork carnitas, contain GMOs The website also states that the company is trying to eliminate the use of GMOs, but it's difficult due to the fact that finding reliable sources of corn and soybeans that don't have them is nearly impossible.

The chain is only one of a few that are reporting their use of GMOs, according to the Huffington Post. Other major companies include Whole Foods and Ben and Jerry's.
