Chipotle adopts new chicken-slaughter policy
March 13, 2008
DENVER — Following nearly a year of discussions with PETA and a shareholder resolution submitted by the group, Denver-based Chipotle Mexican Grill has agreed to give purchasing preference to chicken suppliers that use a less cruel slaughter method called controlled-atmosphere killing (CAK). In light of Chipotle's announcement, PETA has withdrawn its resolution, which Chipotle unsuccessfully petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission to exclude from its 2008 proxy.
PETA will continue to work with Chipotle to ensure that the company's suppliers adopt CAK in a timely manner.
Chipotle joins Burger King, Wendy's, Carl's Jr., Hardee's, Popeye's and Safeway in giving purchasing preference or consideration to CAK suppliers.
