Charley's Grilled Subs awards $18,000 in scholarship funds

August 10, 2011

Charley’s Grilled Subs has announced that it has awarded $18,000 in scholarships to restaurant employees throughout its 430-unit franchise system.

The goal of the scholarship program is to help attract, retain and reward deserving employees who need financial assistance in order to pursue higher education opportunities.

“A significant number of our employees are high school students working to be able to afford college. Many of our young employees are involved, hard-working and focused individuals, and we wanted to do something to help them out and to support their desire for education,” said Charley Shin, CEO and founder of Charley’s Grilled Subs.

To qualify, Charley’s requires applicants to have a minimum 2.5 GPA and serve as a Charley’s employee for at least six months while in school. The scholarships are based on a points system, where extra points are awarded for each year having been employed while in school, leadership roles in clubs or on sports teams, and current grades in school.

A major component of the application is the essay portion, where students express their personal goals and long term career plans, as well as why they feel they should receive the scholarship. Candidates who successfully tell a compelling story of overcoming great odds to achieve their goals while maintaining a positive outlook were awarded the highest number of points.

Participation in community service, sports or other extra-curricular activities also are factored in, as well as financial needs. Applicants include a transcript, a letter of recommendation, and proof of attendance/ acceptance at their respective schools for consideration.
