Big Boy expanding footprint, dining options in Michigan

August 23, 2019

Warren, Michigan-based Big Boy (not Cincinnati, Ohio-based Frisch's Big Boy) opened a prototype restaurant this week in Southfield, Michigan, at 26400 Telegraph, that will let customers order via counter and will help the brand innovate when it comes to menu items.

The store reflects the chain's move into the fast casual dining space. Big Boy Restaurant Group CEO David Crawford told the Detroit News the location will serve as a test pilot for the counter-focused point-of-order approach.

"In other states, we have a lot of interest in a smaller-footprint Big Boy," he told the publication.

The chain is also aiming to open traditional stores in Michigan (Muskegeon and Okemos), as well as at least 70 units in Southeast Asia via a partnership with Destination Eats. Those restaurants, according to the report, could be fast casual, in-store dining or drive-thru locations.
