The cost of dining out is seeing varied shifts across popular menu items, with coffee and burgers continuing a slight upward trend while prices for burritos and chicken wings have dipped marginally, according to the latest Menu Price Monitor data from Toast. The report, which aggregates sales data from approximately 140,000 restaurants on the Toast platform, offers a granular look at menu inflation as of June 2025.
The median price of a regular coffee remained flat at $3.50 in June compared to May 2025, but saw a 3.6% increase year-over-year. However, premium coffee drinks are getting pricier, with the 75th percentile price for a regular coffee rising to $4.50 — a 1.1% month-over-month increase and a significant 9.5% jump from a year ago. Cold brew coffee also saw a slight uptick, with the median price reaching $5.42 in June, up 0.4% from May, maintaining year-over-year increases around 4%.
Like regular coffee, various factors can affect the price of cold brew coffee, including sourcing, demand, labor, equipment, overhead and weater, said Brian Koerber, principal of Brand Journalism and News at Toast.
"Coffee requires very specific conditions to grow and is primarily sourced from an area known as the 'bean belt,' which lies between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn," he said. "Extreme weather, including both droughts and flooding, has put a strain on coffee production over the past few years, but demand has continued to grow."
Cold brew coffee is sold at a premium since it takes a longer steeping period — typically between 12 and 24 hours — to create a less acidic, more desirable and smoother-tasting coffee.
"It also requires more time and storage, making it difficult for restaurants to prepare for unexpected demand. On the other hand, it also has a longer shelf life compared to drip coffee, "Koerber said.
Beer prices bubbled up slightly to a median of $6.46, a 0.3% increase from May 2025, though year-over-year increases have remained under 3% since February 2024. Burgers, a staple on many menus, also continued their slow ascent. The median price for a burger reached $14.39 in June, up 0.1% from May, with year-over-year increases hovering around 3%.
Conversely, some popular dishes saw minor price decreases. The median price of a burrito was $13.37 in June, down 0.1% from May, with year-over-year price increases remaining below 4% since February 2024.
Similarly, chicken wing prices took a tiny dip, with the median price for an order at $13.75, a 0.1% decrease from May. Year-over-year increases for wings have stayed below 3% since February 2024.
Although a recent avian flu outbreak in the U.S. sent egg prices soaring, prompting some restaurants to add egg surcharges, reduce the number of eggs they serve or switch to liquid eggs to keep costs and prices low, broiler chickens, the type of bird that produces chicken wings, differ from egg-laying hens, have not been as susceptible, said Brian Koerber, pincipal of Brand Journalism and News at Toast.
"Moreover, there are far more broiler chickens than egg-laying chickens in the U.S., and they can be processed for their meat in about six to eight weeks," he said. "Egg-laying chickens, on the other hand, start laying after 18 weeks of age. All of this adds up to a more plentiful supply of chicken wings that are less exposed to the virus, and helps explain why the cost of chicken wings for restaurants has not increased as much as egg prices."
