Yum! Brands and Visa launch RFID payment test

August 18, 2005

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Yum! Brands, parent company of Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell, is partnering with Visa to test a contactless payment system using radio frequency identification in a number of its Atlanta stores.

According to a news release, Visa Contactless is a new feature on the company's credit cards, which enables customers to make purchases by holding their contactless cards near a secure reader at the point of sale instead of swiping it. Customers maintain possession of their credit cards while making purchases instead of handing them to someone else, and no signature is required for payments under $25. Visa claims transactions done with its RFID system occur 25 percent faster than cash transactions.
