Velvet Taco named Chris Schultz as its chief executive officer on Wednesday, tapping a veteran of Voodoo Doughnut and Starbucks to oversee the brand's domestic and international expansion.
Formr CEO Clay Dover announced last month that he was leaving the brand after eight years.
Schultz brings oveer 30 years of restaurant leadership experience to the role. He most recently served as CEO of Voodoo Doughnut, where he managed the brand's entry into new markets.
Prior to that, Schultz spent nine years as senior vice president of operations at MOD Pizza, helping scale the company from a single store to more than 350 locations. His background also includes 13 years with Starbucks, focusing on development and operations during a period of global growth.
"Velvet Taco is one of those rare brands that knows exactly who it is: bold, creative and unapologetically original," Schultz said in a company press release. "My focus is on fueling that spirit as we grow, staying true to what made Velvet Taco special while building the kind of brand and culture that can thrive anywhere in the world."
Founded in 2011, the Dallas-based chain is known for its globally inspired menu and "Weekly Taco Feature" program. The company currently operates more than 50 restaurants across eight states and recently opened its first international location in London.
Under Schultz's leadership, the company plans to continue expanding in major metropolitan areas and will explore non-traditional venues, such as airports.
