U.S. markets opening to Irish beef after 15-year ban

News comes at a time when beef prices are at historic highs, as is demand for premium beef; new Irish supply could bring price relief.

January 5, 2015

Irish beef is returning to the US market after a 15-year hiatus, according to the Irish Times.

The US banned imports of European beef following the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis – more popularly known as "mad cow disease" --  in the late 1990s. The ban was lifted in March 2014, and Ireland will become the first EU state to return to the U.S. market.

The news comes at a time when beef prices are at historic highs, as is demand for premium beef. The new Irish supply could bring price relief.
