Tortas Frontera, Chef Rick Bayless’s fast-casual concept, was honored this week with the 2015 Hot Concept Award at the Multi-Unit Foodservice Operators conference.

The MUFSO award recognizes emerging brands poised for future growth, according to a company press release. Tortas Frontera offers a casual approach to Mexican cuisine, while staying true to Bayless’s core values of sourcing local ingredients and offering hand-crafted Mexican fare.

Bayless has won numerous awards for his Chicago restaurants Frontera Grill, Topolobampo and Xoco. In 2010, Bayless and partner Manny Valdes created Tortas Frontera with a goal to bring the authentic flavors of Mexico to a broader audience. Today, Tortas Frontera has four Chicagoland locations, a unit in Philadelphia and plans for more throughout the country.

"It’s an honor for our brand to be recognized in a market with so many notable concepts," Bayless said. "Our team has worked strategically to expand Tortas Frontera while prioritizing what we are known for, which is offering true Mexican flavors using only the freshest ingredients. The MUFSO Award confirms that we are on the right track."

According to the MUFSO website, criteria for the honorees include: First restaurant unit open less than seven years prior to award recognition; a minimum of three restaurant units and a strong financial ranking.
