The 41-year-old chain, featuring such staples as its original “charburgers,” fries,shakes and malts, has grown from one store in Santa Barbara, Calif., to a multiunit entity with locations across the state. In 2011, the chain, owned by Greenwich, Conn.-based private-equity firm KarpReilly LLC, plans to open itsfirst restaurant locations outside of California, in the Phoenix area. Besides its core menu items, the chain, to appeal to the more sophisticated tastes of its growing customer base, alsoserves a number of grilled sandwiches, premium salads and a kids’ menu.
