Toast has released Toast Go 3, a handheld point-of-sale device, designed to enhance speed and service for restaurants operating in diverse environments. The device, which features built-in cellular connectivity and ToastIQ, the company's intelligence engine, is more compact, lighter and durable than previous models. It has an IP65 rating for protection against dust and liquids, a 24-hour battery life and the ability to withstand drops from 5 feet.

"The launch of our first Toast Go handheld in 2018 revolutionized restaurants by putting the power of Toast directly into staff's hands," Steve Fredette, president and co-founder of Toast, said in a company press release. "Since then, our handhelds have powered over 2 billion orders, and every aspect of the new Toast Go 3 is shaped by that wealth of experience."

The device allows staff to take orders, process payments and print receipts over both Wi-Fi and cellular networks, with seamless switching between the two. Several ToastIQ features are integrated to enhance handheld service, including Menu Upsells, which provide real-time prompts to boost checks; Shift at a Glance, offering instant updates on 86'd items; and Digital Chits, highlighting guest preferences and special occasions.

The company noted that 43% of restaurants surveyed by Toast have extended offerings to off-premise catering, curbside pickup and operations in food halls and farmers markets, underscoring the demand for flexible solutions.

Key features of the Toast Go 3 include:

  • Cellular network payments and printing: Enables servers to take payments and print receipts or kitchen tickets beyond traditional Wi-Fi range.
  • Durable, restaurant-ready design: IP65-rated and shock-absorbent to endure the demands of a busy shift.
  • Automated pairing recommendations: ToastIQ-powered Menu Upsells automatically suggest pairings and upgrades.
  • Real-time staff intelligence: Digital Chits provide personalized guest details, and Shift at a Glance offers immediate updates on specials, low stock and staffing changes.
  • Extended battery life: Operates for more than 24 hours on a single charge.
  • Compact design: 16% lighter than the Toast Go 2, while maintaining a large screen for order taking and payment processing. It also includes built-in front and rear-facing cameras.

Taelor Carmine, owner of Bodhi, a Thai craft cocktail bar and bistro in Indianapolis, highlighted the device's resilience.

"On the first night we used them, a tornado knocked out our power — but thanks to cellular connectivity, we could still run cards and close out tabs without a hitch," Carmine said in the release. "The upsell prompts have also made it quicker and easier for servers and bartenders to suggest add-ons, and it's been especially helpful for training new staff."

The Toast Go 3 will be available in September. A Wi-Fi-only version is also available.
