Technomic: New Yorkers strongly support menu labeling

September 4, 2008

CHICAGO — Technomic Inc. has announced that 86 percent of New York City restaurant users consider the recently-enacted menu-labeling law there — requiring chain restaurants with 15 or more units to disclose calories on their menus — to be a positive move, according to a survey completed by the company.

The survey found that a vast majority of the same consumers believe that having calorie counts on restaurant menus helps them make more informed ordering choices and will have a beneficial overall impact on consumer health and nutrition.

"A large and growing number of consumers appear to want the government to play a more active role in regulating health and nutrition in restaurants," said Bob Goldin, executive vice president of Technomic. "We fully expect nutritional disclosure on restaurant menus to become more widespread in the next few years."
