Sweetgreen Inc. has sold its Spyce business, which developed the robotic "Infinite Kitchen" technology, to mealtime platformWonder for $186.4 million, more than double the $70 million it paid for the technology in 2021.

Wonder, which purchased Grubhub last year for $650 million, said the sale will allow it to reinvest in core priorities and sharpen its focus on growth and profitability, according to a press release.

The total consideration for the Spyce business includes $100 million in cash and $86.4 million worth of Wonder's Series C Preferred Stock.

Sweetgreen will maintain a close connection to the technology, signing a supply agreement and license agreement that allows it to continue deploying the Infinite Kitchen technology across its restaurants.

"We remain deeply confident in both the Infinite Kitchen's future impact and the brilliant team behind it," Jonathan Neman, co-founder and CEO of Sweetgreen, said in the release. "As we focus on driving long-term, profitable growth, our collaboration with Wonder will enable us to continue expanding and enhancing the Sweetgreen experience."

Technology transition

The Infinite Kitchen technology, which is in use in over 20 Sweetgreen locations, has been credited with delivering faster throughput and enhanced food quality and consistency, while also allowing front-of-house staff to focus more on customer hospitality.

As part of the sale, 38 Spyce engineers and support staff, including co-founders Michael Farid, Kale Rogers, Brady Knight and Luke Schlueter, will transition to Wonder.

Wonder, which has been evolving from a multi-restaurant operator into a technology-driven food platform and has nearly 90 locations, plans to leverage the technology to scale its operations.

"The acquisition of Spyce's Infinite Kitchen gives us leading robotics capabilities that will transform how food is prepared and served," Marc Lore, founder and CEO of Wonder, said in the release. He said the technology will enable the company to eventually operate more than 100 restaurant concepts out of small kitchen spaces.

Sweetgreen operates over 270 locations across the U.S. Wonder features multiple chef-backed restaurants, including concepts from Bobby Flay and José Andrés, and offers multi-restaurant ordering options.
