Ryan Winter expanded his footprint in the Des Moines area with the opening of his second Steak 'n Shake last week at 1045 S.E. Alice's Road. The 2,750-square-foot restaurant blends the brand's 1930s heritage with a high-tech service model.

Retro design meets modern tech

The "next generation" design leans heavily into the brand's midcentury roots while integrating modern frictionless service features. The exterior features heritage black-and-white tiling and floor-to-ceiling windows, while the interior includes:

  • Self-service kiosks: Guest ordering is handled via kiosks that accept credit, debit, cash, and bitcoin.
  • Digital integration: A themed drive-thru experience utilizes the latest digital menu board technology.
  • Nostalgic aesthetics: The dining room includes a "soda fountain" style back bar, classic pendant lighting, and the brand's signature "spinning" stools.

"I knew Steak 'n Shake would do well in this market because of their steakburgers, homemade milkshakes and reasonable prices," Winter said in a company press release.

Founded in 1934 on Route 66 in Normal, Illinois, the brand's history is on full display in the Waukee store. Decor includes a neon Route 66 sign and heritage wall art featuring vintage newsletters and store photos. Despite the shift toward self-service kiosks, the restaurant will staff a "hospitality host" to assist guests in the dining room.

The menu remains anchored by the brand's core pillars: Steakburgers, milkshakes served in frosted glasses with homemade whipped cream, and fries cooked in beef tallow.

Customers may also utilize the Steak 'n Shake rewards program at the location to earn points for free menu items and access mobile "order and pay ahead" features.
