Starbucks using blockchain to track coffee supply

May 8, 2019

Starbucks will use the Microsoft Azure Blockchain Service for processes such as bean-to-cup tracking, according to a report by Forbes.

In 2018, the coffee giant ran a blockchain initiative that tracked coffee beans from farmers in Costa Rica, Colombia and Rwanda. The company plans to expand this effort in the future, the report said.

With this initiative, Starbucks can help its coffee farmers by ensuring fair trade throughout the entire supply chain.

In addition to this project, Starbucks and Microsoft are also examining predictive drive-thru ordering, which uses individual customer preferences to update advertising tools such as digital billboards, according to the report.
