Starbucks is searching for a global chief brand officer to oversee product, marketing, digital, customer insights, creative and store concepts, according to an email shared Tuesday with FastCasual by Emily Albright, Public Affairs, Starbucks Coffee Company. The news comes after Michael Conway, Starbucks CEO of North America, announced his retirement Monday.

"We've had a version of this role before, and (CEO) Brian (Niccol) has made the decision to bring it back," Albright wrote.

Niccol said in an open letter published on Sept. 10, that great brands were defined by a clear identity and the ability to deliver a consistent, compelling experience.

"Starbucks is one of the world's iconic brands," Niccol wrote. "As we refocus on what makes Starbucks special, our chief brand officer will help us deliver on the ambition we have for this beloved brand."

Conway, who served 11 years at Starbucks, was named North America CEO nearly six months ago.

"Recognizing the unmatched capabilities of the Starbucks team and seeing the energy and enthusiasm for Brian's early vision, I could not think of a better time to begin my transition towards retirement," he wrote in a press statement. "I look back on my career with immense pride at all we've been able to accomplish together and cherish all I've learned from partners around the globe as they bring the Starbucks experience to life. I look forward to supporting Brian and our partners in the coming months as they get Starbucks back to Starbucks."

Starbucks will not backfill Conway's role, but he will continue as an executive adviser through November to assist with the transition.

"Sara Trilling will continue to lead our North America retail operations, including Siren Retail. These changes are meant to make things clearer, help different parts of the company work better together, speed up decision-making, and support everyone in doing their best for our store partners and customers," Albright said.
