Starbucks, Costco and Whole Foods offer Union Bill alternative
March 22, 2009
Bloomberg News: Starbucks Corp., Costco Wholesale Corp. and Whole Foods Market Inc. offered an alternative to the union-backed "card-check" legislation that U.S. business groups are spending millions of dollars to defeat. The legislation, known as the Employee Free Choice Act, would let employees form a union once a majority signed cards requesting one. Currently, companies have the right to require a secret-ballot election to unionize.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Home Depot Inc. and Burger King Holdings Inc. also are among companies that oppose the card-check bill, as does billionaire investor Warren Buffett, an Obama supporter and adviser.
