A new fast casual concept, Peli Peli Kitchen, which merges South African and American comfort foods, is opening in Houston. The city is already home to two Peli Peli full-service restaurants, which have enjoyed success and are the catalyst for the fast casual concept, said Partner and Executive Chef Paul Friedman.

"Peli Peli Kitchen will allow us to bring our culture and our flavors to a more casual setting that's perfect for families and those wanting a quick bite," he said. "Our menu will feature items ranging from $8 to $18, so hopefully it will encourage our customers to eat with us every day."

The first Peli Peli Kitchen will occupy a 3,535-square-foot end-cap space in the Gateway Spring Valley project developed by Houston-based Ersa Grae Corp. Located on the northeast corner of Campbell and Interstate 10 at 9090 Katy Freeway, Peli Peli Kitchen plans to open by Spring 2016.

Friedman's menu for Peli Peli Kitchen features comfort foods, featuring all natural fresh ingredients, such as burgers, tacos, sandwiches and plates that incorporate Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, and Indian cuisines — the melting pot of South Africa. A "sauceologist" will help customers pair the right sauce to complement their meals, and hospitality specialists will assist customers with orders, drinks and table maintenance. For drinks, customers will be able to enjoy Peli Peli's private label wines from South Africa along with local craft beers, Friedman said.

Friedman, along wtih co-owners Michael Tran and Thomas Nguyen, said they are seeking additional locations for both Peli Peli and Peli Peli Kitchen concepts in Katy and the Woodlands, along with potential opportunities in Austin and Dallas.
