Smashburger taking a bite out of Beantown

December 2, 2013

Smashburger is entering the Boston market when it opens its first location Dec. 11 at the Sherwood Plaza in Natick, according to a company press release. This is the first of 12 Boston-area Smashburgers slated to open over the next six years.

Adding some regional flare to the menu, Boston-area Smashburger restaurants will showcase menu items created with local flavors and tastes in mind. The Natick menu, for example, includes the New Englander burger topped with cranberry sauce, grilled onions and cranberry stilton; the Cranberry BBQ, Bacon & Cheddar burger topped off with haystack onions; the Spinach, Cucumber & Goat Cheese Chicken Sandwich with tomatoes and onion and finished with a balsamic dressing; and hand-spun shakes like Peanut Butter & Jelly and Chocolate Oreo. Those looking for healthier choices will have a lighter-side selection of dishes that are 600 calories or less, and alternatives such as gluten-free buns, Veggie Frites and organic beverages, Smashburger founder and Chief Concept Officer Tom Ryan said in the announcement.

"We are thrilled to launch our better-burger concept in the Boston area," he said. "Our menu provides guests with the ability to try one of our signature creations or to get creative and build their own."

Smashburger CEO Scott Crane said the company is excited to bring the first Boston-area Smashburger to Natick.

"With the help of our local franchise partners, we are confident that our first Boston area opening will be a smashing success," he said. "We look forward to continued growth in the market."

Robert Savin, president of Savin Foods USA, is the Boston franchise owner.

"In addition to offering signature better burgers, guests will be pleased to see regionally inspired burgers, chicken sandwiches and shakes, along with a variety of lighter alternatives," he said.
