Shake Shack Inc. is doubling down on its digital future with Project Catalyst, a sweeping technology initiative designed to modernize its infrastructure as the brand eyes a long-term goal of 1,500 company-operated locations.

The multiyear strategy focuses on four primary pillars: cloud-native systems, artificial intelligence, data analytics and the brand's first-ever formal loyalty program.

A modern foundation

To anchor the initiative, Shake Shack has partnered with Qu, a unified commerce platform, to overhaul its point-of-sale and kitchen display systems. The transition aims to improve throughput and order accuracy by utilizing Qu's "Qube" edge computing technology, which ensures faster service even during peak traffic periods.

"Shake Shack is entering a significant phase of growth, and building the right foundation to support that scale is a top priority," CEO Rob Lynch said in a company press release. "Project Catalyst strengthens the technology and digital capabilities that power our restaurants and connect us more meaningfully with our guests."

The AI-driven shack

A central component of Project Catalyst is the integration of proprietary AI capabilities. Rather than focusing solely on guest-facing bots, the brand is prioritizing an "intelligent operating layer" for its managers. This system will provide:

  • Real-time operational insights to help operators identify performance gaps.
  • Proactive alerts and recommendations to streamline daily workflows.
  • Enhanced data foundations to support automated decision-making across the enterprise.

Justin Mennen, Shake Shack's chief information and technology officer, said the goal is to connect POS, digital, and AI capabilities into a single ecosystem to deliver the brand's "Enlightened Hospitality" at a massive scale.

Driving frequency through loyalty

For the first time in its history, Shake Shack will launch a dedicated loyalty platform. While the brand has previously utilized digital promotions through its app, the new platform is designed to deepen guest retention and drive visit frequency through personalized communication and data-driven rewards.

The loyalty rollout will be supported by a new unified data platform, giving the company a 360-degree view of guest behavior and operational performance across its more than 670 global locations.

Financial outlook remains steady

Despite the significant investment in tech infrastructure, Shake Shack reiterated its financial guidance for the first quarter and full fiscal year 2026. The company stated that the costs and projected benefits of Project Catalyst were already factored into its three-year financial targets.

Since its 2004 debut in Madison Square Park, Shake Shack has grown to 430 U.S. units and 240 international locations. Project Catalyst represents the digital roadmap intended to carry the brand through its next 1,000 openings.
