Shake Shack growing plant-based menu items

After months of taste tests, Shake Shack has released three plant-based options to the core menu — Veggie Shack, Non-Dairy Chocolate Shake and Non-Dairy Frozen Custard.

"Our fans asked us to create a Shack-worthy veggie burger, and we listened," stated a blog posted on Shake Shack's site. "Born out of testing many different veggie burger iterations in our NYC Shacks, the Veggie Shack is made from a proprietary blend of real garden vegetables and grains, seared to perfection with American cheese, pickles, crispy onions and ShackSauce all on a toasted potato roll."

The Non-Dairy Chocolate Shake and Non-Dairy Frozen Custard are made with NotMilk, a sustainable, plant-based beverage. Shake shack began testing the plant-based treats last year in New York and South Florida.

Using a combination of technology with AI chefs and R&D teams, NotCo was able to replicate the same rich flavor, creaminess and functionality as the existing items, replacing both dairy and egg components in under four months, according to Shake Shack VP of Supply Chain Jeff Amoscato.
