Senators talk legislation over tomato-picker wages
March 13, 2008
Examiner: Two Democratic senators have threatened to introduce legislation and scrutinize companies with government contracts to pressure Florida tomato growers to boost the wages of farm workers.
McDonald's and Yum Brands Inc. agreed to work with the Florida-based Coalition of Immokalee Workers to develop a plan to pay a penny more per pound for tomatoes, but those deals are on hold after growers balked at participating.
