Chicago-based Portillo's Inc. announced Monday that its board of directors has appointed Chairman Michael A. Miles Jr. as interim CEO, effective immediately.
Miles, who has served as chairman of the board since 2014, replaces Michael Osanloo, who is stepping down as president and CEO. Osanloo will act as a special adviser to Miles and the board for the next 90 days to help with the transition.
The company's board has formed a search committee to find a new CEO. The committee includes directors Paulette Dodson, G.J. Hart, Eugene I. Lee Jr. and Miles.
"The Portillo's brand resonates deeply with our guests, but our recent performance has not measured up to expectations," Miles said in a company press release. "After careful consideration, the board believes, and Michael agrees, that now is the right time for a leadership transition."
Miles previously served as president and chief operating officer of Staples and as chief operating officer of Pizza Hut. He also served as Portillo's interim CEO from 2014 to 2015.
The board also appointed Lee as lead independent director during the transition. Lee was CEO of Darden Restaurants from 2015 to 2022.
