In a letter to Starbucks partners in the US, chief operating officer Troy Alstead outlined a number of personnel policy updates and perks that will take effect over the next several months.

"We recognize that creating the best possible experience for you must be our number one priority if we are to successfully fulfill our long-term ambition of building one of the world’s most trusted and admired companies," said Alstead in the letter.

Updates include:

  • Changes to the company's dress code policy allowing visible tattoos, colored ties, neck scarves and black denim. New jewelry guidelines have also been added. "As partners, your appearance is a reflection of the Starbucks brand and how you show up collectively is important to our customers. At the same time, we want to build a company where self-expression, empowerment and inclusion are nurtured," said Alstead in the letter.
  • An increase starting pay for new partners in all US markets beginning in January.
  • Raises or lump-sum bonuses for baristas and shift supervisors starting in January.
  • Pay will be reviewed and communicated annually, and all baristas and shift supervisors will now be on an annual pay review cycle or may be eligible for a lump sum equivalent.
  • Special recognition, including opportunities for bonuses, for those exceeding performance expectations.
  • Performance review forms and ratings for baristas and shift supervisors have been eliminated in favor of ongoing "development conversations" with store managers.
  • Starting in January, US store partners can choose one free food item, per shift, from the pastry or ready-to-eat case.

The changes are based on more than 3,000 suggestions submitted through Starbucks' Partners Facebook page. The updates will start in the US, and will extend internationally as relevant.
