Employees at a New York City-based Chipotle Mexican Grille hit the strike line Tuesday claiming labor law infractions.
The mini-strike at the Greenwich Village location, at Sixth Avenue, involved about 30 employees, according to a Daily News report. The Service Employees International Union 32BJ claims there were complaints filed against more than 20 Chipotle locations regarding scheduling activity, according to a Splinter report.
A New York City lawsuit filed earlier this month by NYC MayorBill de Blasio's administration accused Chipotle of violating nearly every aspect of the city's Fair Workweek Law, which requires employers to provide predictable schedules to fast food and retail workers. The administration is seeking $1 million in restitution for workers at five Brooklyn restaurants along with civil penalties.
"Chipotle has been working cooperatively with the city to ensure we have systems and processes in place to comply with the law, so we believe the filing of charges was unnecessary," Chipotle Chief Corporate Reputation Officer Laurie Schalow in a statement to FastCasual regarding the filing.
